ridiculously long update on the journey so far!

Another day on an amazing journey!

Today has been a little stressful, a group of us just booked all of our italy plans online. And let me tell you, slow internet+foreign websites+time limit on internet= STRESSFUL!!! I’ve already used over half of my allotted 125 minutes and that was only to book two flights and attempt to get my email forwarded to my shipboard one… oh well! Still totally worth it! :D

I didn’t really get to finish telling you what happened the other days….

Day 2 on the ship was basically an ENTIRE day of orientation stuff.  Was kinda lame cause we were all in satellite classrooms instead of in the union because there are so many of us. They have not exactly worked all the kinks out of having the largest SAS voyage ever yet…. Probably one of their biggest problems is working the satellite classrooms.  Not to mention they were going over all the rules like don’t fall of the balcony, which I think we all figured out after the 3rd time they said it. Haha

I did get to meet some more pretty cool people and we just spent any of our free time exploring the ship and playing cards until it was time to go to bed to get ready for classes in the am!! We also had to set our clocks ahead another hour. (now +2 hrs from charlotte time zone)

Day 3  (CLASS 1) we hit pretty rough seas over the night, and waking up at 7:00 to get breakfast did NOT help my stomach! I was really excited for classes, though and got into my first class, History of Art I, right in time.  Unfortunately I lasted about 20 minutes before I had to leave because I was too sea sick.  I went to the health services area and they gave me a stronger sea sick medicine and an excuse for all of my classes.  Good thing, because as soon as I got back to my room I passed out on my bed and did not wake up until 3:00pm! Talk about drowsy medicine! Sometime in there some crew members came in and had to close our port hole because of captain’s orders.  With the port hole shut, our roule is literally pitch black, so I can definitely see how I would sleep until 3!

I woke up to MUCH calmer waters and a MUCH better stomach thank goodness!! Apparently I was not the only one feeling the huge waves! When I finally left my cave and went up to the docks, there were a bunch of people talking about how sea sick they had been all day.  I felt fine the rest of the day, and we just hung around the ship.

They opened the bookstores in the morning and there was literally a line down the hallway of people waiting in line.  Luckily I slept through most of the hassle, and while the stores was pretty well raided, I managed to get some pretty cool SAS stuff including a hoodie, long sleeve shirt, lanyard (for my ID), waterbottle, and some other small stuff before it was all gone. SCORE! You should see all the SAS gear walking around the hallways these days. Haha boy do we SASers know how to represent our floating campus! :]

Later that night, we attended the first Explorer Seminar.  These are optional and happen daily at 2000 (8pm).  That night, we listened to a professor from UVa (who is also going to be the academic dean for the next voyage) talk about where to go and what to see while we are in Spain.  It was really interesting and DEFINITELY got us all pumped for Barcelona!!!!!!!

That evening, we got to sign up for all these subgroups and organizations on the ship.  The Living and Learning Coordinators set up groups based around leadership, service, health, academic support, career support, and a lot others that each had multiple opportunities for students to get involved.  Boy did we go CRAZY signing up for things!!!!! :D  you all know me, im such a joiner…. I signed up to work a lot with the service group.  We are working on organizing and holding the voyagely (is that even a word?!) auction that raises money to help fund scholarships for future voyagers as well as future SOS (students of service) projects.  I also signed up to help with the ambassador’s ball through the leadership organization.  Have not gotten details about that yet, but will keep you posted! We signed up for all different kinds of exercise things including zumba, yoga, palates, and I don’t even know what else at this point! I signed up for a couple in the career support groups too.  One for education majors (that I unfortunately could not attend the meeting tonight for), another for grad school advice, and some other one that I honestly don’t remember any more!! Haha oops! :)

Over all a pretty decent day if I do say so myself! Might have been a bumpy morning, but hopefully we don’t hit rough seas like that again for a while.

Day 4 (CLASS 2)

***from now on, my day counts are going to be a little bit more tricky.  Cause not only do I have an actual count of the days on the ship, but we also have to keep up with class days too! So hopefully I will keep to the format you see here… if not sorry!! Ill do better next time I promise!! :]

After losing yet another hour of sleep (now were at +3 hrs from charlotte for those counting), I woke up at the ungodly hour of 7am to get some breakfast before my 8am class.  Boy is that going to take some getting use to!! The seas were calm, and I was feeling much better about making it through the entire day of classes :] still took some sea sick meds just in case though. Haha.

All of my teachers were really understanding of all the sea sick students, and just told me what I had missed.  So no problems there! Sweet. I really like all of my classes.  Art history is fascinating to me.  It is so cool to learn all of the different terms for the kinds of sculptures and buildings.  I think that is going to turn out to be my favorite class!  Global studies is slightly more complicated with the satellite seating, but kyle and I just hang around the Art History classroom so that we have good seats to see the projector.  Thankfully they are starting to work out the kinks with the technology.  Apparently the first day was kinda stressful because the powerpoint the professor was using had itty bitty little writing that students could not read.  The professor fixed that as well as other little kinks like repeating questions students ask into the microphone so that the satellite classrooms actually get to hear the question.  The professor himself is pretty funny. He keeps adding little pop culture references you have to catch them fast or else you miss it completely. Actually makes you want to pay attention huh?!  Global music could be cool. The professor seems really awesome, though so far it has just been really easy stuff like classifying instruments into different systems. It has lots of potential though!! :]

The professor from last night talked again at the second Explorers Seminar, and this time he told us all about the food and meal times in spain. Lets just say we are NOT going to have to worry about not getting enough to eat in Spain!! If anything, we are going to get spoiled being off the ship… so far we have seen three consistent parts to every meal on deck:  pasta, potatoes, and salad. Mmmm my three favorite things! NOT. Oh well. I have learned to appreciate pasta, and I am trying some of the less scary potatoes.  At least they have had bananas and some other dishes like Caribbean jerk chicken! (favorite so far hands down! Yum!)

After his talk, a group of us met up to discuss the possibilities for travel during our time in Italy.  Kyle and I had been talking to people and seeing if they wanted to join in on our crazy trip ideas, and turns out we had a whole small group of us totally interested! (we felt so popular :] haha) we spent about an hour discussing possibilities and then made plans to book tickets and reservations the next day (aka today).

Then I headed to bed because we were told to add yet another hour to the clocks for the morning! I think the time adjustments are the hardest part so far about the trip.  Im already not a morning person, so 8am class is hard enough! But now we are 4 hours ahead which means that when I wake up at 7am here, every one at home is still in lovely REM cycles because it is only 3am there. Totally jealous guys!!  Thankfully we only have two more hours to gain before we get to port in Barcelona and another 5 days to get there!!

Day 5 (CLASS 3):

HEY LOOK I AM FINALLY UP TO TODAY AGAIN!! YAY!!!

Anyways, this morning was the hardest morning YET to wake up. We tried to get up early to go to zumba at 0700 before breakfast, but failed miserably! Haha ended up getting to breakfast at 0750 just in time to grab a box of cereal and head straight to class.

Classes were pretty good. I accidentally summed them up above so just refer back to those :]  the only difference was that I was SOOOOO tired by global studies and global music I was falling asleep in the desk!

After classes, I was planning on taking a nap, but I ended up eating lunch with a really good group of people and we ended up talking up until dinner time.  Was totally a better option than a nap in the end.

We had dinner, then another Explorer Seminar.  This time there was a clown!! He did a show and then talked about what it was like to live the life of a clown. Was pretty cool and definitely got a lot of laughs!

The Italy group met up, and the 6 of us finalized our plans for italy.  But you will just have to wait until tomorrow to hear the plans cause im tired and ready for bed!! :] hows that for a cliff hanger??
